SONGS OF SYDNEY'S HISTORY
Dr Peter McKenzie
Peter McKenzie is an Aboriginal man, born in the historic Sydney Aboriginal community of La Perouse. His music is a proud extension of his Aboriginality and as such, his songs resonate the Aboriginal history of his city, exclusively bounded by the Eora language area.
The focus of Peter’s performance is to present contemporary storytelling, and connection to historic place. Peter performs three songs, including two laments, Lament for Eora and Lament for Eora 2, to mourn the loss of many of the Sydney coastal people, the Eora; and Bayside Mission Blues about his memories of growing up in the La Perouse community.
In his interview, Peter discusses how he became interested in playing music, his memory living at La Perouse, and his performance at Our Music, Performing Place, Listening to Sydney.
